3 Ways to Advocate for Safer Biking and Walking in Chapel Hill Today
“Every important change in our society, for the good, at least, has taken place because of popular pressure-pressure from below, from the great mass of people.”- Edward Abbey
You can do a few simple things to help make Chapel Hill a safer place to bike and walk.
Engage with Chapel Hill’s new Vision Zero Map
Add a marker where you don’t feel safe, and add notes on what the problem is. I recommend using a computer, but you can do this on your phone. This is a topic near to my heart as I’ve tabled many events to get feedback on the key barriers keeping people from biking and walking.
Download Chapel Hill Connect to Report Issues
Chapel Hill uses a service called “See Click Fix.” When you see a problem, please take a photo and submit it using the app or website. The town makes notes and, hopefully, fixes it. This is part of public record, so it is also helpful to chime in on issues already on the map to help the town prioritize any concerns. Popular examples are lights out, potholes, signal timing problems, and down trees. I use it to document cars in the bike lane, leaves taking up 1/2 of the street, and abandoned carts on the greenway.Add to the Chapel Hill Low-Stress Bike Map
Biking around Chapel Hill and Carrboro is pretty pleasant if you know all the shortcuts (and have an eBike!) Let us know if we have missed a low-stress bike route on our crowdsourced map.
